Pentagon Issues Memo to Remove Trans Service Members From The Military via @916times
A new memo from the Pentagon will have openly transgender individuals be disqualified from serving in the U.S. military and trans service members will soon be removed from all military ranks. This policy changes the previous Defense Department policy that prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.
A previous memo from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that people with a history of gender dysphoria would no longer be able to join the military, but they should be “treated with dignity and respect.” This newest memorandum goes further, removing all current service members who have gender dysphoria or any history of it.
The policy comes after President Trump issued an executive order on 1/27 ordering the policy change and identifying gender dysphoria incompatible with “high standards for troop readiness, lethality, cohesion, honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity.”
The new policy directive calls for establishing procedures to identify military service members with gender dysphoria or a history of it within 30 days to “begin separation actions.”
Exceptions could be made for transgender military members who directly support “warfighting capabilities” only if the military feels it has a “compelling” reason to let them stay in.
The
Trans rights advocacy groups have condemned the new policy as discriminatory.
