SCAM ALERT: Fake Coinbase Texts Targeting Crypto Users
Per WCSO:
“A new SMS scam is making the rounds, pretending to be from Coinbase. The message includes a fake OTP (one-time password) for a withdrawal you didn’t initiate and urges you to call a phone number to verify. This phishing attempt is designed to trick you into giving up sensitive information.
Example scam text:
“(COINBASE) The OTP code for your withdrawal is 736191. If this was not you please call us on +1 (877) 338-9228. Ref CB97405.”
Red flags to look out for:
-Messages from unknown or random numbers
-Unsolicited OTP codes or withdrawal alerts
-Requests to call a number to verify activity
-Overly urgent or suspicious language
Protect yourself:
-Do not call or respond to the message
-Never share your OTP with anyone
-Always verify activity by visiting Coinbase’s official website or app
-Use your phone’s “Report Junk” feature to flag scam texts
-Enable app-based two-factor authentication (2FA) instead of SMS
If you receive a message like this, report it to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office using our Fraud Awareness Hub at: https://washoesheriff.com/fraud
Always use official channels to check your account.
Stay vigilant and help stop scams before they spread. Stay safe, Washoe.”
