Driver Pleads Guilty to Killing Reno Judge, Only Get 30 Days in Jail
Christopher McDougal pleaded guilty to vehicle manslaughter today for the killing of U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks who was walking in a crosswalk in downtown Reno in 2023.
McDougal, 34, was initially charged with vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving, and a civil infraction for failing to yield and exercise due care to a person in a crosswalk. The other charges were dropped in exchange for McDougal pleading guilty to the vehicular manslaughter. He was then sentenced by Judge Hazlet Stevens to only 30 days in the Washoe County Jail.
Stevens gave McDougal an additional 180 days in jail, but suspended that sentence for two years if McDougal obeys all the laws, pays $1,140 in fees, performs 200 hours community service, attends a victim impact session and takes eight hours of traffic school.
