The first presidential primary in decades in Nevada has not generated much voter interest, with low turnout reported on Tuesday
Democrats have already cast their votes through early and mail-in voting, while Republicans are looking ahead to the caucuses on Thursday. Only 3,800 Nevadans showed up to the polls in the first three hours of voting on Tuesday.
President Joe Biden faces minimal opposition in the Democratic race, and Republican front-runner Donald Trump is not on the ballot.
Nevada Republicans will hold separate caucuses on Thursday to determine delegates to the national convention.
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is listed on Tuesday’s primary election ballot, but some Republicans are choosing to vote for “None of These Candidates” to express their support for Trump. This primary is a shift from previous elections, as both parties have traditionally used caucuses to determine delegates.
State lawmakers decided to switch to a primary for 2024 following new rules from the Democratic National Committee discouraging caucuses and a revised calendar that displaced Iowa and New Hampshire from their usual leadoff contests.
