Sparks Police Chief Makes Statement on Officer Involved Shooting, Suspect Found Deceased
Sparks police chief Chris Crawforth held a press conference this morning along with Reno PD and Washoe County Sheriff.
He confirmed 3 officers were shot and have since been released from the hospital.
On Friday March 29, a Sparks officer initiated a traffic stop in the 1700 block of Greenbrae Drive around 1:40pm. He was shot in the shoulder as he approached the driver who pulled out a handgun and immediately started firing rounds through the window. The shooter fled the scene and crashed into another car at the intersection of Greenbrae Drive and Rock Blvd, abandoning the vehicle and running on foot.
At that point Dispatch received calls about a person jumping fences in the 1400 block of Greenbrae Drive and Prospect Ave. Officers from all three agencies responded.
The shooter then attempted to enter a home and was forced out by the residents inside the home. Officers pursued him to another residence he was thought to have entered. When the officers contacted that residence, an elderly woman answered and dropped to the ground as the suspect began firing from inside the home. A Washoe County deputy was then shot. He along and the elderly woman had to be pulled from the scene by another officer while an additional Sparks officer who was also shot, but was able to remove himself from the scene.
At that point the assailant fled that residence, jumped a fence and broke into another home occupied by another elderly woman who hid from the shooter in her home. When he was in the backyard, officers were able to get her out to safety.
According to Chief Crawford, while SWAT and a negotiator team worked for several hours to make the shooter surrender,a shoot out between police and the suspect occurred more than once.
At 10pm SWAT breached the residence and reported that the suspect was found dead at the scene. His identity will be released by the medical examiner in the coming days as the investigation takes place.
Quite a crazy day for Sparks! Thankfully no civilians or police officers were seriously injured or killed. #sparks #nevada #officerinvolvedshooting
