Washoe Commissioner Says He Was Threatened by State Officials and DA to Certify Election Results or Face Consequences
At the recent Washoe County Commissioners board meeting, Washoe County Commissioner Michael Clark stated that he was changing his vote from a NO to a YES out of fear of reprisal from Attorney General Aaron Ford, Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, and Washoe County District Attorney Christopher Hicks.
In a statement he read after apologizing to his constituents, Clark proceeded to detail what he believes are threats made for him to certify the recount canvass, and that he would be doing so under duress and under fear of criminal prosecution by said officials.
Vice Chair Jeanne Herman, who is 84 years old and the daughter of a former mayor, bemoaned the state of affairs in Washoe County and the state, saying in her 10 years in office she had never seen things this bad. Before voting NO again she also stated:
“There are hills to climb and hills to die on; this might be one of those. My constituents come to me with reports of fraud in the election. We’ve had people come here and report over and over the hardships they’ve had to make their vote count. I’ve always felt it was my duty to protect the voters’ rights by not certifying a bad election canvass. I’ve even filed election complaints in the past and never got a response; that’s kind of to be expected. I just try to do my job, and I cannot vote for this. I’m sorry.” She further stated the State had no appetite for election integrity.
The crux of the issue were requests for recounts to be done and by hand to address several issues that Commissioners and the Registrar of Voters themselves admitted were a concern, and not with the voting machines said to be part of the problem. Instead, the Attorney General filed a Writ of Mandamus to the Supreme Court to “compel” the Commissioners to certify the recount/election results.
The various reports given by experts showing issues with the recount and the entire primary election have yet to be investigated, but were certified under duress.
Is this business as usual or do you believe elected officials overstepping their bounds? Thoughts?
