University Nevada, Reno Becomes 5th School to Forfeit Against San Jose State University Volleyball
The Wolfpack women’s volleyball team becomes the 5th team to forfeit their upcoming match against SJSU. They’re also the first school to specifically cite fairness & safety concerns as reason for forfeit.
The move comes as concerns over the inclusion of transgender athletes in NCAA sports gains more opposition. A player on SJSU, Blaire Fleming, is transgender. Earlier this year, one of Fleming’s own teammates and team captain, Brooke Slusser, joined a lawsuit filed against the NCAA over its Title IX inclusion of transgender athletes in college sports, stating it goes against the protection and inclusion of female athletes.
Gabrielle Antolovich, the board president of the Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center, told news station KTVU that the forfeitures were an “attack on equal rights”, stating, “Title IX is a protection of women. And trans women are part of that protection.”
What do you think, is this an issue of equal rights for transgender athletes or are the rights of biological females being failed by a rule meant to help them?
